Severus Snape sighed irritably. How he hated students. And especially, he hated students on the first day of class. Always so bubbly and bright and happy... well, he would soon fix that. He swept through the dungeons, looking rather like an over-grown bat, and stalked into his classroom. He strode toward his desk, passing between twin rows of students desks. Pulling out his chair, he seated himself, his robes arranged neatly on the chair. Scowling slightly, he lifted his wand and lit the torches in the room, then set three pieces of chalk to writing up the instructions to a semi-difficult potion on the board. This done, he leaned back in his chair, his scowl more prominent now, and his arms crossed. The first students would soon arrive. Severus allowed himself an inward smirk. They would regret having potions.

Danny walked in the door. He was looking forward to Potions, he found it easy and funny watching other miserable sods try and make potions. The only thing he didn't like about Potions was Snape, whom he hated. However none of these emotions showed on Danny's face. It was as blank as it could be. He took his place at the frot of the class and took out his potions book.

Gabrielle walked into the classroom, a genuine smile on her face. She loved Potions - it was the only class that she was actually good at. She always got good grades in Potions, with very little real effort. This class never seemed like work to her, so studying for it was actually quite enjoyable, whereas all her other courses felt like work. She did fairly well in her other classes, but only because she worked hard at them. She flashed the professor a bright smile and took a seat on the left side of the classroom, at the back, and pulled out her cauldron, potions textbook, a handful of parchment, a bottle of ink and her favourite eagle owl feather quill. She sat upright and awaited the beginning of class, grumbling inwardly at the slowness of her classmates.

Hermione sprinted through the maze of corridors in the dungeons under the hogwarts lake. left. left. right. left. right. right. straight ahead. right... after about two minutes of running as fast as her legs would carry her her legs grew tired. Hermione was a very determined person and wanted to maintain her reputation of punctuality. She was running so fast now that her side was beginning to ache and her chest was rising and falling at the speed of sound - or so it seemed. The tapping of her shiny black school shoes echoed off the walls so it sounded like there were ten Hermione's in the corridor. The mould on the walls smelled rotten and musky which did not help to heighten Hermione's mood now that she was tired and had a cramp.
Several minutes later Hermione arrived at the door to the potions classroom and halted before entering. Her checked her watch. She was early by four minutes. she checked her appearance in a little mirror from her pocket. Her face was a little rosy from sunning, but she would cool down in the dungeon soon. Satisfied that Professor Snape had no reason to deduct house points from her Hermione strode confidently into the classroom and began to set up her cauldron and ingredients for the lesson.

Gabrielle barely glanced up as a rather flushed looking Gryffindor walked confidently into the room, taking a seat. Something Granger, she thought. A fellow Prefect. A Mudblood. She sneered slightly, then turned back to the board, copying out the instructions into a notebook. Professor Snape didn't expect them to copy out the instructions, but Gabby liked to keep a record of the potions she knew. She was rather accomplished at potion-making. Her wand was rather too short for much use as far as Transfiguration and Charms were concerned, and the core wasn't really suited to either subject, but wands were rarely required for potions... another thing she loved about the subect. She looked up again as another student entered, this one a Slytherin. Her eyes were daggers on the girls back as she sashayed down the aisle between the desks, pulling up a seat in the front. She began gathering the ingredients, while Gabrielle watched. Gabrielle lifted her eyebrows increduously, shook her head, then turned back to her writing.

Severus observed the students as they entered the classroom. The first to enter was a boy that he remembered to be a Gryffindor 2nd-year. He gave the boy a small sneer, but could not fault him - he was the first to enter, before even the Slytherins. I'm sure he'll slip up later. The Professor thought evilly as the student pulled out his textbook. The Gryffindor student was followed by a Prefect of his own house, Gabrielle Woods. She flashed him a bright grin, which he acknowledged with a slight nod of the head and the tiniest upward twitch of his lips, which could be classified as a smile, considering who it came from. He saw her pull out her book and knew that she would soon be copying down the instructions on the board. As the Woods girl was writing, another Gryffindor entered the room, this one the Prefect, Hermione Granger. Severus's face quickly returned to the much more pronounced sneer. Unfortunately, she was also on time, so he was unable to deduct points, but the lesson was young. A bell echoed throughout the halls. Severus stood from where he had been seated. "The potion you will be making today is the Pepper-Up Potion." He declared tersely. "What are you all waiting for? Get started!" He glared around the class, most specifically at the Gryffindors. The Professor prowled the classroom, sneering at the Gryffindors, and praising his Slytherin students. As he prowled, another Gryffindor ran into the classroom, looking rather distressed. She apologised for being late, and moved towards her desk. "Twenty points from Gryffindor for your tardiness, Miss Phelps." Severus felt truimphant. He finally got to take away the points from the Gryffindors who had been annoying him all lesson. "And consider yourself lucky that you don't have a detention."

Lily settled herself quickly "Damn" she mubled under her breath hoping that Professor Snape had not heard her she couldn't believe it she had just lost points for gryffindor and one more slip up she would have a detention well at least that's what she thought and she couldnt stand any more time with Snape than was nessisary. she began making the potion on the board carefully following the instructions so that he would at least have nothing else to take points off for.

Rose finally found her way down to the dungeons, and entered cautiously, knowing she was already late. "Sorry," she said as she entered, flashing a sly grin at the Potions master, who, she knew, favoured Slytherins, so she doubted he would take any points from her house. Rose swiftly took her seat at a desk and studied the instructions given. "Pepper-up potion," she muttered to herself. "Excellent." She would need no help for this. Her father had been involved in the ministry, developing potions such as Veritaserum to help get the information out of people. He usually made this potion himself after coming home from a long day at work, and Rose had studied him carefully. She began to follow the instructions on the board, reading each line at least twice before acting upon it. This usually ensured she made a good mixture, but of course, everyone (even Slytherins) makes mistakes.

Another girl sidled into the classroom, one of his students, a Slytherin. "Sorry," She flashed Severus a smile, which he acknowledged with a small nod. "Nevermind, Miss Wilder. Do try to be on time next time." He smirked inwardly, knowing that the Gryffindors would not be pleased with this. He moved quietly down the aisles of his classroom, peering into student's cauldrons, occasionally praising the student - Slytherins, of course - and more often sneering at what he referred to as 'pathetic, half-baked attempts at a true art.' These, naturally, came from Gryffindor students, who lacked the subtlety that was required to be a Master of Potions.

Harry had ran. He had ran faster than he ever had before. It did not help that the class he was so desperately trying to reach on time was the one of his despise. "Potions-what rubbish," Harry thought to himself angrily as he continued down the lengthy corridor. What truly surprised Harry was that his heart, trying desperately to keep up with his incredible pace, could not be heard throughout the entire whole of the dungeons. By a few familiar cobwebs that had been there since day one, Harry realized he was finally closing in on the true depths of the dungeons-the potions classroom. Then, he spotted it.
Just ahead, not even fifty feet away, the large doors to the potions classroom towered above him as if symbolizing impending doom. His piercing green orbs scanned the doorway, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose for a moment before finally closing enough distance to feel the deep, cold, horrifying vibes that radiated from the Potions classroom. He burst through the doors rather loudly, panting miserably as his calves and thighs felt as if they were aflame. Taking a few moments to lower his breathing rate to the point where he could actually speak, Harry walked over to where Hermione was sitting. "Sorry," Harry grumbled loudly over to Snape before he took his seat next to Hermione.

"Great!" Lily thought to herself sarcastically "More points for Snape to take from Gryffindor" Well at least the blame would be off her for losing the others beforehand. She finished the third-last line of her potion and the colour-change indicated that nshe had done it correctly.

Severus watched, dark eyes burning coldly with veiled hatred, as Harry Potter burst in through his classroom door. "Sorry." Potter grumbled, then went to sit next to that Granger girl. Severus's eyes narrowed and he sneered, "Twenty points from Gryffindor. And you will have detention Saturday night." He watched the boy's reaction and smirked inwardly. "My, my... first class of the day and Gryffindor has already lost fourty points." His sneer grew into a smirk. "Do hurry up, Potter. Most of the class are already nearly done."
